17th century ancient necropolis found hidden on Croatian island

An ancient necropolis dating back to the 4th-5th centuries AD was discovered on the famous Croatian island resort of Hvar in the Adriatic Sea.

According to the Ancient Origins, the necropolis was built in 4-5 centuries AD.

Archaeologists have also found funeral utensils, amphorae, oil lamps, glass bottles, money, pottery and pottery in the Hvar necropolis. 

In addition, archaeologists found 12 skeletons in one of the tombs. It was surrounded by masonry. This suggests that its owners were wealthy people, scientists say.

The remains and burial utensils were sealed in large amphorae.

Scientists have also noted that burial styles can vary widely. For some people, simple stone graves were used, and for others – buildings with tiled roofs.

Archaeologists believe that the number of pottery found in the Hvar necropolis will open a “new vision of pottery production”, and a wide range of ritual tombstones will allow researchers to analyze the island’s trade links with other settlements at the time.
