Astronomers detect activity in a planetary object

Published on

A team of astronomers, led by Colin Chandler, a PhD student at Northern Arizona University, announced that he had discovered earlier this year an activity emanating from Centaur 2014 OG392, a type of smaller bodies in the solar system.

Scientists used data from several telescopes located in Chile and Arizona, USA.

According to research, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, carbon dioxide and/or ammonia are the most likely candidates causing activity in this and other active centaurs.

As a result of the team’s discovery, centaur, first discovered in 2014, has recently been reclassified as a comet, and will be known as C/2014 OG392 (PANSTARRS).
