Pending the final vaccine, scientists are trying to find alternative ways to neutralize the virus. The National Laboratories for Emerging Infectious Diseases (NEIDL) at Boston University have found a way to make virus particles disappear in seconds.

Boston University has joined forces with the company Signify, the leader in the lighting industry, to make a surprising discovery. Ultraviolet radiation is very effective with SARS-CoV-2, so much so that, using special equipment, radiation inactivates the virus.

The researchers, led by a doctor and associate professor Anthony Griffiths, have treated inoculated material, that is, infected with the virus, with different doses of ultraviolet radiation to assess its inactivation capacity under various conditions.

The conclusions are surprising: by applying the relevant radiation under optimal conditions, the virus load is reduced by 99.9999% after 25 seconds.

“The results of our tests show that above a specific dose of UV-C radiation, the viruses were completely inactivated: within seconds we could no longer detect any viruses,” said Dr. Griffiths in a statement published by Signify.

The discovery invites a positive look at the future of the fight against the coronavirus. “We are very excited about these findings and hope that this will accelerate the development of products that can help limit the spread of COVID-19,” says the doctor.
