Swiss scientists find out the cause of the death of the Dyatlov group

A tourist group led by Igor Dyatlov died in the Northern Urals in the winter of 1959 under mysterious circumstances.

Swiss researchers have confirmed the version of an avalanche on the tent of Igor Dyatlov’s group in 1959. An article with the conclusions of scientists was published by the scientific journal Communications Earth & Environment.

The researchers found that the avalanche occurred on a relatively canopy hill due to the powerful winds and the actions of the tourists themselves, who set up a tent in the wrong place.

“If Dyatlov and his group had not cleared part of the hillside from snow when setting up the tent, no tragedy would have happened. This was the main, but not the only reason for the avalanche onset,” the publication says.

Researchers have built a model of the snow slab vanishing. According to their conclusion, the tourists set up a tent close to the slope, having previously cut down a large snow niche in it to protect it from the wind. For 9-13 hours, snow continued to sweep, increasing the weight of the already disturbed and unstable plate and its pressure on the slope. When the weight of the slab reached a critical point, it crawled like an avalanche along the slope.

As a result, when at night the snow masses began to slide down the mountainside with a noise, the tourists jumped out and were carried away by an avalanche. The frost with a force of minus 25 degrees froze the boys and girls.

A group of students of the Ural Polytechnic Institute under the leadership of 23-year-old Igor Dyatlov died under unknown circumstances in a campaign in the Northern Urals on the night of February 2 in the area of Mount Kholatchakhl.

The incident was officially called an accident caused by the irresistible force of nature.

According to the official version of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, the tourists died due to the cold. In July 2020, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced that the question of the reasons for the deaths of tourists at the pass was finally closed.
