Cascadia Code was announced last May at the Microsoft Build event and is, in short, the company’s new source specifically designed for development. A monospaced typography developed alongside the new Windows Terminal application that, in the words of those responsible, “provides a better experience in command line and code editors.”
And to tell the truth, the source is aesthetically beautiful, although it has been created specifically for the use of development professionals.
Cascadia Code is also an open source font with an open typography license from SIL. And it is available for download for free on GitHub. The currently available version is 1909.16.
Cascadia Code includes the very useful programming ligatures
With the next version of Windows Terminal, if this new font has not been installed separately, it will be installed automatically. Cascadia Code, in addition to emerging from the hand of the new Windows command console, takes its name from it as revealed by a project manager.
Because the name “Cascadia Code” comes from the Windows Terminal project and its preparation. Before launch, the code name of Windows Terminal was Cascadia. And in fact, according to the programmer Kayla Cinnamon, some of the source files within the console still use this name. “As a tribute to the terminal we liked the idea of naming the source according to its code name,” he says.
To convince themselves of the election, they conducted a survey on Twitter along with other shuffled names and the users participating in the vote coincided with the election of Microsoft. “Code”, by the way, was added to underline that this typeface is especially intended for programming and, of course, includes the most useful ligatures.
“Programming ties are more useful when writing code, since they create new glyphs by combining characters. This helps make the code more readable and easy to use for some people,” Cinnamon says.
