Microsoft is “messing it up” again with an update

Published on

Last week we saw Microsoft roll out a cumulative update for versions 1903 and 1909 of Windows 10 intended to offer numerous bug fixes. But it seems that Microsoft does not finish getting it right and this build has once again caused problems for users.

In this case, those affected seem to be all those who have relied on the February cumulative update of Windows 10 1903 and 1909 and who now encounter a bug that Microsoft itself has already acknowledged. A bug that causes error message KB4535996 to appear.

Offline if you use VPN

Microsoft has recognized the existence of the bug, a bug that affects different versions of Windows. This is the case of Windows 10 version 1909; Windows 10 version 1903; Windows 10 version 1809; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019; Windows 10 version 1803; Windows 10 version 1709 Server: Windows Server version 1909; Windows Server version 1903; Windows Server version 1809; Windows Server 2019; Windows Server version 1803; Windows Server version 1709.

The consequences of this error are that those who use Microsoft productivity software, such as Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Outlook, the different versions of Edge … and who at the same time use a VPN client to create a virtual private network, they find themselves unable to connect to the network.

The Redmond company has assured that it will launch a patch to correct this failure in early April and while it has reported the problem on the support page:

“Devices that use a manual or self-configured proxy, especially with a virtual private network (VPN), can display a limited or no Internet connection status in the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) in the notification area. This can happen when you are connected or disconnected to a VPN or after changing the state between the two. Devices with this problem may also have trouble reaching the Internet using applications that use WinHTTP or WinInet. The following are examples of applications that could affected on devices in this state, but not limited to Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office, Office365, Outlook, Internet Explorer 11 and some versions of Microsoft Edge.”

In the absence of a patch to fix the failure, for now, the only solution seems to be to restart the PC. If this failure affects you, for now, you have no choice but to wait for Microsoft to offer a definitive solution.
