Texas Gov. who opposed mask mandates catches COVID-19

Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday, his office announced.

Abbott, a Republican, is fully immunised against the virus, according to his office, which added that he gets checked every day and this is his first positive result.

He is currently sequestered at the governor’s home and getting a monoclonal antibody treatment from Regeneron, according to the statement. Abbott is in good health and is not feeling any symptoms at the moment.

Cecilia Abbott, Texas’ first lady, tested negative, and Abbott’s close associates have been contacted, the statement stated. Abbott, according to images posted to his Twitter account, attended an indoor “Republican Club” event Monday evening.

Abbott follows a long list of governors who have tested positive for Covid-19 during the pandemic, though his diagnosis is likely to draw criticism from critics given his opposition to mitigation measures as the Delta variant spreads across the country.

Abbott has spoken out against mask mandates and issued an executive order prohibiting school districts from asking students to wear masks. In March, he lifted the state’s mask law and permitted firms to operate at full capacity, ignoring public health officials’ warnings.

“Too many Texans have been sidelined from employment opportunities. Too many small business owners have struggled to pay their bills. This must end. It is now time to open Texas 100%,” Abbott said at the time.

Dropping mandates, he further added, “does not end personal responsibility and caring for your family members, friends and others in your community. People and businesses don’t need the state telling them how to operate.”

However, the state is reeling as a result of a recent rise in new Covid-19 cases. According to state health data, Texas had 327 ICU beds available on Tuesday and 11,791 lab-confirmed Covid-19 patients in hospitals around the state.

And according to the latest data provided Monday by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Texas had the most paediatric Covid-19 hospitalizations in the country, with 239 cases.
