US CDC warned, adding, people who have unlabeled whole red, white, or yellow onions at home to throw them away and not eat them.

To date, 652 people have been reported infected in 37 states and 129 people have been hospitalized with the epidemic strain of Salmonella Thompson.

The vast majority of sick patients are either Colorado residents (82) or had travelled to Colorado in the week preceding their illness. Only two people did not report travel to Colorado in the week before their disease.

Epidemiologic and traceback data reveal that whole red, white, and yellow onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, and sold throughout the United States by ProSource Inc. are one source of infections in this outbreak.

According to interviews with people diagnosed, 75% of them ate or may have eaten raw onions or foods containing raw onions before being ill. Several sick patients reported eating at the same places, implying that they were part of illness clusters.

Investigators determined that ProSource Inc. supplied whole onions to many of the restaurants where sick people ate, including to the restaurant where the condiment cup was collected.

Investigators are working to determine if other onions or suppliers are linked to this outbreak.
