Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office issues arrest warrant for former President Evo Morales

The Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant against former President Evo Morales on Wednesday, whom the ‘de facto’ government has accused of alleged crimes of sedition and terrorism

The Bolivian Prosecutor issued an arrest warrant against former President Evo Morales on Wednesday, whom the interim government of Jeanine Áñez has accused of alleged “sedition and terrorism” crimes. The interim Minister of Government (Interior), Arturo Murillo, shared on Twitter a photograph of the document in which he is ordered to apprehend Morales, a refugee in Argentina, and transfer it to the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor to “give his informative statement.”

“Mr. @evoespueblo [Morales’s Twitter account], to his knowledge,” Murillo wrote. The interim government of Bolivia filed a complaint against him in November in the Prosecutor’s Office in La Paz for crimes such as terrorism, accusing him of inciting violence against the Provisional Executive of Áñez from Mexico. The complaint is based on evidence such as a video in which a voice attributed to Morales is heard, whose authenticity has not been demonstrated by independent sources.

The voice, allegedly from Mexico by phone, incites a coca grower leader in Bolivia, against whom there is also an arrest warrant, to keep cities blocked to prevent food from entering. Evo Morales has been in Argentina since last week from Mexico, where he arrived as an asylum after leaving Bolivia on November 11. Morales resigned on November 10 denouncing a coup d’etat to overthrow it, after that same day was published a previous report of the Organization of American States (OAS) that warned: “irregular serious” in the elections of October 20 in which he was declared a winner for a fourth consecutive term.

The final report of the OAS established a “malicious manipulation” in the elections, now annulled by an emergency law that foresees new elections in early 2020, still undated. Morales, who has asked to be welcomed as a refugee in Argentina, said Tuesday at a press conference in that country that he was the victim of a “coup d’etat” and that he is not afraid of being arrested.

Argentina announces that it is a refugee

For their part, officials from the National Migration Directorate have informed EFE that Morales received confirmation of his refugee status. The granting of this status rules out any possibility of extradition, as Foreign Minister Felipe Solá pointed out last Thursday. Morales arrived on December 12 in Buenos Aires after having remained in Mexico after leaving his country.
