BlackBerry returns with the eye-catching Damon Hypersport Pro electric bike

Published on

BlackBerry has long since disappeared from the mobility landscape, but its solutions are still present in various scenarios. This is demonstrated by its new alliance with Damon, the startup that will present during CES 2020 the promising Hypersport Pro electric motorcycle.

This motorcycle will have a technological security suite developed by BlackBerry as part of its QNX real-time operating system and will allow for example to have a frontal collision detection system and a monitor to avoid blind spots in the rear-view mirrors.

Yes, BlackBerry is still alive

So we will not have any type of technology directly related to smartphones, but of course, BlackBerry is an important part of these active safety measures for the electric motorcycle that Damon startup will present.

It’s Hypersport Pro had been under development for some time, and finally, we can not only see it on stage at the CES 2020 in Las Vegas that begins in a few days, but those interested can book it from January 7.

BlackBerry provides the CoPilot platform (different from that of Ford and its CoPilot 360), an active security solution that for example sends vibrations to the handles if it detects a potential frontal collision.

This system will also send visual alerts on a small screen if it detects risks in the blind spots of the motorcycle, and an LCD screen will also offer a rearview to provide additional assistance to the rider.

Behind that security system is the QNX platform that RIM (BlackBerry) bought in 2010. The firm came to use it in some mobile terminals, but the truth is that its applications have ended up moving to areas related to other scenarios in which real-time and latency information transfers are vital.

The firm had already introduced this type of solutions in the automotive market: in June 2018 they took out chest and highlighted that more than 120 million cars of brands such as Audi, BMW, Ford, KIA, Porsche or Volkswagen used them in various sections: not only safety, but infotainment systems, and it seems that these advances also want to make the leap to electric motorcycle manufacturers such as Damon.
