iOS 13: What’s new, compatible devices, how to upgrade and install it

Published on

iOS 13 now has been officially published for all users with a compatible iPhone. Apple’s mobile operating system arrives in version 13 with great changes and publicly for anyone who wants to upgrade to this new version. iOS 13 can now be downloaded and in addition to seeing the news we will also see what’s new, more about compatible iPhones, who can install it and how to do it.

It was first announced at WWDC19, when we saw a preview. Later and during these last three months we have seen how Apple has launched different betas polishing the system. Finally, last week during the keynote of the new iPhone 11 the company announced the final release date of iOS 13, this September 19.

What’s new in iOS 13

  • Dark mode: It is one of the most anticipated novelties of the new version, and involves changing the style of the system interface and compatible applications (Messages, Reminders, Notes and more) for dark tones. Not only is it more pleasing to the eye in dark environments, but it can mean significant energy savings on iPhone with OLED display.
  • Write sliding: Apple has baptized writing by sliding over the keyboard as QuickPath. The big difference with the classic writing mode is that you don’t need to roll the dice to press each letter of a word, but to slide from one letter to another.
  • Improvements in Siri: Siri goes to neural technology, which means that a neural network is responsible for generating your voice, which is a more natural voice. The Shortcuts app is now included in the operating system, instead of having to download it from the App Store.
  • Light control in portraits: It is possible to control the intensity of the lighting in the portraits made with the lighting mode.
  • More photo editing options: The Photos application includes several new features, with new settings to control brightness, contrast, exposure and others, with more effects, video editing and the ability to rotate videos. In addition, the photos are organized in new views by days, months and years.
  • Better performance: iOS 12 focused a lot on performance improvement, and iOS 13 continues work. According to Apple, Face ID unlocks the terminal 30% faster, and applications have been repackaged differently so that downloads take up to half and updates are 60% smaller. Thus, applications should be launched twice as fast as with previous versions.
  • Map improvements: Apple’s map application is more detailed than ever, although at the moment only in the United States. What is available to everyone is the possibility of marking places as favorites and creating collections of places to share with friends. Some areas also include Look Around, something like Apple Street View.
  • Sign in with Apple: It is an own Apple login system, which you can use to log in to compatible applications and websites without providing your email or phone number, thus protecting your privacy.
  • Better privacy in HomeKit: Speaking of privacy, HomeKit receives Secure Video , a technology that encrypts videos recorded by connected security cameras. The goal is to prevent anyone, not even the Internet or Apple provider, from accessing them.
  • More customization in Memojis: The memojis are more customizable than ever being able to choose from piercings to earrings, teeth and expressions.
  • Three new animojis: As for the animojis, there are three new designs available for you to control using your face in real time. It is a cow, a mouse and an octopus.
  • Support for several users in HomePod: Apple’s smart speaker recognizes voices from different people, offering personal results to each person. This includes music, messages, reminders, notes and more.
  • ArKit 3: The latest version of Apple’s augmented reality library allows developers to place objects behind people, in addition to using Motion Capture to record a person’s movements using a single lens.
  • Improvements for AirPods: Siri can read for you the messages that come to you in any application compatible with SiriKit, and you can share what you are listening with another person with AirPods.
  • Improvements in Reminders: The Reminders app is completely renewed, with a new bar where you can issue reminders using natural language. Siri will interpret the context, dates and places and create the reminder automatically.
  • Share name and photos in Messages: Optionally, you can share your name and profile picture with others who don’t have you in your contact list.
  • Location permissions: Permission to share the location with applications includes new precision controls, so you can choose to share the location always or only while using the application.
  • Compatibility with the PlayStation 4 controller: It is possible to use an official PlayStation four controller on the iPhone in compatible games.
  • Apple Arcade: How could it be otherwise, the latest version of iOS includes Apple Arcade, the subscription service to enjoy hundreds of games on different Apple devices.
  • Customizable fonts: You can download and install new fonts to use in applications, directly from the App Store.
  • Download heavy apps using data: A curious change of iOS 13 is that now you can choose to download large applications using your mobile data, while before you had to wait for Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Control of the menstrual cycle in Health: It is possible to register the menstrual cycle in the Health app, with calculation and prediction of the fertile period, notifications, statistics and symptom recording.
  • Song lyrics in Music: When this option is activated, the lyrics of the songs are shown, synchronized with the playback of the current song and with colorful animations.
  • Silence strangers: A novelty of iOS 13 is the ability to automatically block phone calls from strangers. Those who are not in contacts will automatically go to voicemail.
  • Optimized battery charge: It is an option designed to increase the battery life of your iPhone. Using machine learning, the iPhone learns from the use you make of the mobile and avoids charging more than 80% of the battery unless you need it.
  • CarPlay renewed: In one of the biggest updates of CarPlay to date, the interactive system for Apple’s car opens a new control panel that shows the button on one side and the buttons on the other. In this way, you can control music, view messages and other information without having to switch between applications.
  • Exclusive improvements for iPad: iOS unfolds and receives the name of iPadOS on iPad. It includes all the improvements of iOS 13, but with some exclusive changes in multitasking, being able to load several apps at once, with the possibility of adding widgets to the home screen, support for USB sticks and SMB connections and new gestures to manipulate text.

How to download, upgrade or update to iOS 13

The installation of the new version of iOS repeats the steps of previous updates. When the update is available on your iPhone, iPod or iPad, you will be notified notifying you. When you do, you must tap on the Install now option to start the update process.

If the time comes and you still haven’t received the update, you can try searching manually to try to receive it a few minutes before. To do this you must charge the device, connect it to the Wi-Fi network and go to Settings> General> Software update. From there you can look for updates and install them.

When installing the update you must choose between two options: ‘Install now’ or ‘Later’. This last option allows you to choose another time to install. IOS may ask you if you want to temporarily delete applications because it needs more space for installation: don’t worry, iOS will reinstall the applications after completing its installation.
