Gamescom 2019: More space, more games and Federal Council

Published on

Next week, the world’s largest game fair opens its gates. It should be more pleasant for visitors – even for the prominent Swiss delegation.

Anyone who has ever been to Gamescom has probably experienced it first hand. The Game Fair in Cologne is bursting at the seams: corridors, halls and places to stay are usually overcrowded. No wonder: last year alone, according to the organizers, the world’s largest event for computer and video games attracted around 370,000 visitors.

For this year, one has responded to the ever-increasing interest. The fair will be held for the first time on 210,000 square meters, which is five percent more space. For more well-being, several measures are taken. The corridors in the halls are to become wider, additional lounge and catering areas are to relax the atmosphere, hotspots are calmed down. In total, around 1000 exhibitors from over 50 countries are expected.

Games, games, games

Over the past few years, new consoles have repeatedly provided highlights in Cologne. Gamescom is unlikely to benefit from it this year as the next-generation consoles are not expected until 2020. But that does not detract from the fascination Gamescom. Unlike the E3 in Los Angeles, which primarily defines itself as a novelty trade fair for an expert audience, Gamescom is aimed primarily at fans. This means that nerds, noobs, e-athletes, cosplayers, parents, toddlers and older semesters provide for a colorful mixed audience.

Nevertheless, there are games on the running meter. Many of the world premieres presented in Los Angeles can be played in Cologne. However, the exhibition fatigue of certain manufacturers is also noticeable in Cologne: Activision / Blizzard, for example, shines in Germany – as did Rockstar Games – with its absence, “Overwatch” and “Diablo” fans are watching the tube. After all: At the Sony booth you can play the eagerly awaited new “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”.

But even without these US industry giants, you do not have to look far for the game highlight. Big hitters like “Borderlands 3” (the reason why 2K Games finally got a stand in Cologne again), “Man of Medan” (Bandai Namco), “Monster Hunter World: IceBorne” (Capcom), “Doom Eternal” (Bethesda) , “Fifa 20”, “Need for Speed Heat” (both EA), “Fortnite” (Epic, this time slightly less prominent than last year), “Contra: Rogue Corps” (Konami), “Pokémon Shield and Sword” (Nintendo ), “Rainbow Six Siege” (Ubisoft) and the sci-fi masterpiece “Cyberpunk 2077”, which has already been premiered in LA, will make sure that gamers’ hearts beat faster. In addition, the flatrate Xbox Game Pass at Microsoft will be a focal point.

Federal Council Berset on site

Traditionally, the Gamescom trade fair is accompanied by a whole series of events that address all aspects of the industry. For example, the Gamescom Congress sees itself as a think tank for digitization; topics such as state funding, protection of minors and cost-effectiveness are discussed in panels.

Politicians, too, can not afford to use the fair as a platform. Cologne’s Mayor Henriette Reker is expected to attend the opening ceremony alongside German Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer. The extensive Swiss delegation with local game studios such as DNA, Stardust or Kynoa is also attracting political celebrities: Federal Councilor Alain Berset will open the “SwissGames” -booth in Cologne on 20 August.
