Internet Trends 2019: 49% of humanity still does not have access to the internet

Published on

The famous report Internet Trends is back in its edition of the year 2019. This dossier especially appreciated in the Anglo-Saxon world is the work of the founder of Bond Capital and ex-general Kleiner Perkins, Mary Meeker, and his team. It has been published since 1995 and analyzes the most important trends of the internet world during the past year, venturing what will come in the nearest future.

Internet Trends 2019 is a presentation of 333 slides in which the so-called “queen of the internet” addresses various issues that concern the internet. We talk about advertising spending on the Internet, the incidence of second screens, the importance of interactive games, subscription models or the great importance that data and personalization will have for countless companies and their relationship with customers.

We review below the data that most caught our attention in this report that you can consult in its entirety on the Bond Capital website.

More than half of the planet’s population is connected to the internet

The main conclusion of the so-called “Silicon Valley Bible” is that more than half of the world’s population is connected to the internet. Specifically, around 51% of the planet, which translated to individuals are 3,800 million people. This figure represents an increase of 2% compared to 2017.

One of the main ways of access to the internet in the world are smart mobile phones and the decrease in their sales on a global scale is noted in the growth of connections, which fell around 6 percent in 2018. This reduction, partly, it is also due to the analysis that most of the people who are looking to connect have already connected.

Internet advertising increases your spending

The Internet Trends 2019 report reveals that spending on Internet advertising has increased by 22% in total in the last full year, slightly higher than the growth registered in 2017, which was 21%.

Technological dominate and electronic commerce continues to gain importance

At least at the beginning of June, seven of the ten most valuable companies in the world by market capitalization were technology companies. Specifically, the list is composed of more to less valuable by Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Berkshire Hathaway, Facebook, Alibaba, Tencent, Visa and Johnson & Johnson.

In the complete list that gathers up to thirty companies, we can see how the dominance of American companies is absolute. However, we find Alibaba, Tencent and ICBC from China, Nestlé and Roche from Switzerland and Royal Dutch Shell from the Netherlands, Samsung from South Korea.

On the other hand, the report highlights that e-commerce now accounts for 15% of retail sales, although its growth has slowed by 12.4% in the first quarter of the year compared to the previous year. However, it continues to outperform non-digital retail trade that only grows 2%.

We spend more time on mobile than on television and YouTube and Instagram grow

In 2019, the average daily time that users devote to mobile has exceeded that spent on television. Specifically, 226 minutes are dedicated to the mobile compared to 216 minutes dedicated to television, according to the report.

In the next slide we can see the use of different platforms and see how YouTube and Instagram grow in use. The statistics are led by Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, WeChat and Instagram.

On the other hand, compared to traditional television, video on digital platforms, websites, etc., represents 28% of the daily viewing time. Of course, these figures are for the United States, although they may reveal a global trend.

More privacy and greater concern for harmful content on the network

Another fact that strikes us is that in the first quarter of this 2019, 87% of global web traffic was encryptedAn important figure especially if we compare it with 53% in the first quarter of 2016, which responds to the high interest of users to protect their communications on the network and their data.

Equally revealing is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to combat harmful content, as you frequently recall with each news item on the subject. Among other data, the report highlights that 42% of Americans have received offensive calls through the network or 32% have experienced the spread of false rumors online. In addition, it is noted that one of the main terrorist problems is the radicalization of people on sites such as YouTube and the promotion of political polarization.
