Control the speed of playback on Netflix and YouTube with this great extension for Chrome and Firefox

Published on

If you are one of those people who go through life watching series or listening to podcasts at 1.5x, maybe you already knew this tool or a similar one, and if not, it will come to you with pearls. Videospeed is a browser add-on that lets you control the playback speed of any HTML5 video.

This means that you can control how fast the video is going on sites like Netflix or YouTube. So if you’re someone who wants to swallow a 45-minute episode in 30 or less to catch up on your not-so-favorite series, with this extension you can see it at 1.5x, or even double the speed, or until You reach the limit of what your brain can process.

Although HTML5 offers a native API to accelerate the playback of any video , most of the players found on the web hide those options. This extension simply brings the options to the front so we can decide, and also adds some extra.

More control over HTML5 video playback

Once you install the extension your video players will have new controls in the upper left corner. You can try immediately with Netflix or YouTube, just look at the five buttons that appear now:

Using the “+” and “-” buttons you can accelerate or decelerate the playback respectively. You can also fast forward and delay the video, although this does not seem to work quite well with Netflix.

Each of these buttons also has its own keyboard shortcut, for example: S decreases the playback speed and D increases it.

The best thing is that from the options of the extension you can configure those keyboard shortcuts to your liking, and even add some custom to set your preferred speed at the touch of a key.
