This is Internet in 2019: 4,000 million users, and pages four times heavier than 10 years ago

The Internet has become an essential part of modern life, and although its penetration has grown enormously along with the number of hours each connected user spends, there are still regions of the world where less than 20% of the population has access to a service that we take for granted in other countries.

Since 2005, May 17 is celebrated in several countries on World Internet Day, and to celebrate, this time we will review the current state of the web, its huge growth of users and also how they have been fattening the pages that we visited in recent years.

By March 2019, global penetration of the Internet surpassed 56%, according to the latest statistics from the International Telecommunications Uniion. This means that of the more than 7.700 million inhabitants of the planet, more than 4.300 million are Internet users.

But while in North America and Europe penetration is close to 90%, in regions such as Africa barely reaches on average 37%, and Asia is around 50%. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Oceania, the penetration of Inteternet is above 60%.

In general, the global average of Internet users has grown 1,114% since 2010, and although penetration in Asia is among the lowest, they also represent the largest number of users with more than 2,190 million people connected to the Internet.

And although the use of the Internet has grown year after year, the use of social networks grows even more, in fact, almost 80% of Internet users use social networks, and 9 out of 10 of the more than 3.190 million of social network users, access them through a mobile.

The Internet has also been getting fatter

The web has evolved a lot since its inception, text and hypertext, we have gone from images and video to fully interactive sites loaded with multimedia content and, unfortunately, tracking scripts and cookies and many requests that make the loading of everything more heavy and slow.

Currently, the average in kilobytes of the data size of the transfer of all resources requested by a website is around 1828 KB on the desktop and 1682 KB on mobile.

Let’s compare that with an average of 467 KB on the desktop in 2010, and an average of 144 KB for a mobile web in 2011. It’s an increase of almost 300% in 10 years on the desktop, and more than 1000% in the mobile platform

The main contributors to the increase of the size of the pages have been the images and videos, JavaScript, the commercial announcements, and even the customized typographies

Another interesting fact is that if we talk about websites that use WordPress, then the average size is even larger: about 2278 KB. And remember that WordPress is what is behind more than 33% of all websites on the Internet, and is the most used CMS of all, with more than 60% of the market share.

The size of the Internet is also another that has exploded. According to data from Netcraft, by April 2019 the number of active websites was 1,445,266,139 through 233,886,577 unique domain names. Compare this with just over 215 million in 2009, and we have that the Internet is now almost seven times bigger than 10 years ago.

And if this figure seems great, when we look at the number of individual web pages indexed by Google , the figure amounts to more than 60,000 million(almost 30,000 million more than in 2014), remember that the same website can contain hundreds and thousands of individual pages.
