Apple is the fourth company in the world that generates more revenue for video games. And all without having own video games. Ahead of big industry such as EA and Nintendo, only surpassed by Microsoft, Sony and Tencent. The advantage of having such a solid ecosystem consolidated thanks to the iPhone and the App Store. And Apple Arcade is on the way.
According to a report published by Newzoo that analyzes the most important companies in the global video game market, Apple is the fourth most revenue generated in 2018. The 35 most important companies generated a total of 114 billion dollars in this industry.
And how many correspond to Apple? According to the report 9.45 billion dollars went to Apple coffers in 2018. It represents an increase of 18% over the total obtained in 2018. To put the figures in context, Tencent, which is the first on the list , obtained 19.73 billion dollars. Microsoft, which is the third ahead of Apple, added 9.75 billion.
The iPhone and the App Store as the main responsible
How has Apple managed to be together with the greats of the videogame industry? It is not a company dedicated exclusively to creating games like Tencent, nor a company with video game consoles such as Sony and Microsoft … But it has the iPhone. Apple dominates the world market of mobile videogames thanks to the large number of mobile phones and tablets deployed around the world. A huge market that has been cooked for years and which can offer a multitude of video games through the App Store. With that 30% commission that is carried by the distribution has managed to position itself among the five largest in the industry.
Newzoo explains that this must be added the great flood that mobile games are having with respect to console games . They may not have the same quality in graphics and may not have the same complexity, but what is a reality is that they are eating the video game market. And this is where Apple is and companies like Sony and Microsoft do not. What about Google and Android? Simply the users do not spend as much as in the App Store. The latest Sensor Tower report indicates that developers earn 64% more on the App Store than on Google Play.
