The Song You Love Can Reveal How Committed You Are In A Relationship

If you find yourself humming Adele’s hit song “Someone Like You,” you may be feeling a bit nervous about your relationship.

This is what a new study has found. If you like certain lyrics more than others, it can show how committed or sure you are in a relationship.

Psychologists have discovered that individuals who worry about being left alone tend to like Adele’s lyrics, which are filled with these worries.

However, a University of Toronto study found that people who hum along to The Beatles’ “Love Me Do” were significantly more likely to report feeling highly secure in their relationships.

“Lyrics matter, so pay attention to them,” remarks Dr. Ravin Alaei from the university, highlighting, “the lyrics of your favourite songs about relationships may help validate your thoughts and feelings but may also reveal things about your experiences of relationships that you might not have realised .”

People in the study were put into four groups based on how they felt about relationships. The “anxious” group was worried about being rejected, the “avoidant” group was negative and cold, the “secure” group was confident, and the “mixed” group had people from all of these groups.

The study, which was published in the journal Personal Relationships, evaluated 7,000 distinct songs’ lyrics for their variably “secure,” “anxious,” or “avoidant” content before asking a test group to choose their favorite songs.

The survey found that people in the test group who were “avoidant,” or usually negative about relationships and not eager to get into them, always chose songs with “avoidant” lyrics.

This pattern was also seen in the other groups. Anxious people chose Adele’s “Someone Like You,” which has the lyrics “I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it/I had hoped you’d see my face and be reminded/That for me, it isn’t over.”

The song “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher, with the upbeat refrain “put your little hand in mine/There ain’t no hill or mountain we can’t climb,” was often mentioned by those who were more sure of their relationship.

Dr. Alaei says, “It’s pretty much a manual on how to be securely attached.”
