US Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger introduces AUMF –
a joint resolution that authorizes the deployment of US Armed Forces to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity if Vladimir Putin intensifies his unjust war against our democratic allies.
US Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) introduced a joint resolution on May 1, authorizing the use of the US Armed Forces to protect Ukraine’s territorial integrity in the event that Vladimir Putin intensifies his unjustified war against our Democratic colleagues.
This Authorization for the Use of Military Force to Defend America’s Allies was signed into law by President Barack Obama.
The President of the United States would be authorized to send US forces to respond if the Russian Federation used chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons against Ukraine under Resolution 2022.
Congressman Kinzinger issued the following statement following Secretary of State Blinken’s presentation before the House Foreign Affairs Committee last week.
“We know millions of Ukrainians are displaced, thousands have been killed, and the damage that continues to besiege them is utterly inhumane. The targeting of civilians, mass executions, and countless reports of rape by Russian forces have gone largely unchecked. We must take action to put a stop to these atrocities. Words matter, but so do our actions.
“I’m introducing this AUMF as a clear redline so the Administration can take appropriate action should Russia use chemical, biological, and/or nuclear weapons. We must stand up for humanity and we must stand with our allies.
Kinzinger recalled that US President Joe Biden has repeatedly stressed the need to stop Putin. In this regard, he stressed that such statements are important, but it is also important to take practical steps.
“Accordingly, the Commander in Chief to the world’s greatest military should have the authority and means to take the necessary actions to do so,” he said.
