Will anyone take a plane in the US be subjected to facial recognition?

Facial recognition in airports was first tested in the country in 2017 and is currently used in 15 US airports.

The procedure is always the same: cameras take photos of individual passengers and compare them with those of passports and visas contained in the database. If the information coincides, the person is free to proceed; if, on the other hand, you realize that you have violated the law, immediate action is taken. The problem of privacy

The customs and border protection office writes on its website that this information is encrypted and remains in the system for only 14 days. However, this guarantee does not reassure analysts that it is not clear what would happen if, for example, the FBI asked the airport to have access to these data before their cancellation.

Other cases in the world

Facial recognition systems are already used in other countries of the world such as Australia, Qatar, Canada, the United Kingdom and Greece. In Athens, facial recognition arrived on an experimental basis earlier this month and replaced passports and documents, streamlining the boarding procedures. Sita, a multinational company behind the Smart Path technology – used precisely in these systems – explains that passengers must scan their passport at the airport entrance and have their picture taken. “ Once this operation is completed, they can go to security checks, where they are quickly processed and identified with a face scan, without showing the boarding pass anymore“. And alternative methods to Smart Path have also been tested in Paris and Amsterdam.
