Experts drew up a list of 10 dog breeds that tend to lead very healthy lives and have relatively long lifespans with few health issues.

The first place was occupied by the beagle. The Spruce Pets experts highlighted the beagle’s keen sense of smell and hunting skills. It is a moderately active medium-sized dog with a half-life of 10 to 15 years. The weakest organs are the hip joints and the eyes, but associated problems often occur in older dogs.

The Australian Cattle Dog was rated second and would make a good running or walking companion. These dogs have a half-life of 12 to 16 years with few health problems associated with the breed. However, its active nature can sometimes lead to joint or ligament problems due to wear and tear. These problems can often be corrected with rest, medication, or surgery.

Third on the list are Chihuahuas. These dogs can live up to 20 years and rarely get sick. They generally remain healthy for most of their life. Some breed-related health problems include heart and eye problems, along with loose kneecaps.

Complete list of dogs with few health problems:

  • Beagle
  • Australian cattle dog
  • Chihuahuas
  • Greyhound
  • Poodle
  • Havanese
  • Siberian Husky
  • Basenji
  • Border collie
  • Mongrel or mixed-breed dogs

The edition stated that there is no guarantee that just because a dog is known as a healthy breed it will not develop health problems.

Genetics play an important role, however, it is best to consult with a veterinarian about what a healthy lifestyle entails for your dog.
