Experts from the World Health Organization warned of the deadly danger of working 55 hours or more per week associated with a 35% increase in the risk of stroke and a 17% increase in the risk of dying from coronary heart disease.

The report says the dangerous threshold is 55 working hours per week. After that, the worker may develop health problems.

According to the study, working 55 hours or more per week is associated with an estimated 35% increase in the risk of stroke and a 17% increase in the risk of dying from coronary heart disease, compared with a workweek of 35-40 hours.

The report notes that in 2016, 398 thousand people died from a stroke and 347 thousand from heart disease.

Experts point out that overtime has a particularly strong effect on the health of men, who account for 72% of all deaths, experts emphasize. At the same time, the number of people who work a lot “is growing and now accounts for 9% of the world’s population.”

“No job is worth putting yourself at risk of stroke or heart disease,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. 

In this regard, WHO has spoken out in favor of the adoption of flexible laws. Employers and trade unions, the organization believes, could agree on flexible work schedules that would simultaneously limit working hours.
