COVID patient, 55, moved to Texas after wife sued Minnesota hospital to keep him on ventilator

Scott Quiner, 55, had been fighting COVID-19 on a ventilator in Minnesota for months, but his family is relocating him to Texas for treatment following a life-or-death legal battle with his hospital, according to reports.

Quiner, a 55-year-old Buffalo, Minnesota man, was diagnosed with COVID-19 in late October, according to the Star Tribune. He was moved to Mercy Hospital on Nov. 6 and placed on a ventilator, which has kept him breathing ever since.

Quiner had not been immunized, according to the outlet.

Quiner’s doctors decided to pull him off the machine on Jan. 13 after more than two months on it, according to court filings.

Anne Quiner, his wife, filed a lawsuit to prevent the hospital from unplugging the ventilator, which would “end my husband’s life,” according to an affidavit.

“I am in the process of finding a new facility to provide care for my husband but need more time,” it said.

Anne Quiner, according to accounts, allegedly asked doctors to try different therapies and medications. It’s unclear what those alternative treatments were, but the doctors turned them down.

According to records, hospital lawyers contended that Quiner’s position “is not supported by medical science or Minnesota law.”

A judge eventually granted a restraining order to keep Scott Quiner on the ventilator, and another hearing was scheduled until February 11.

Scott Quiner was transported by helicopter to a hospital somewhere in Texas, according to Marjorie Holsten, a lawyer for the Quiners.

Holsten was contacted by McClatchy News for comment.

Holsten’s social media accounts reveal a history of mistrust toward scientists and publications disseminating COVID-19 vaccination disinformation.

Scott Quiner’s condition at the Texas hospital, according to the attorney, is expected to improve.

“And as he gets better and better, we are going to see that you know what, there are protocols that should be used that hospitals have not been using,” Holsten told the outlet. “And I am hoping that changes are going to be made as a result of this case.”

Quiner was transferred to a Texas facility, according to Allina Health, which oversees Mercy Hospital in Minnesota, where he was being treated.

“The patient was transported to a health care facility of the family’s choice (Saturday morning),” according to a statement obtained by KARE. “Allina Health is grateful the family was able to find a health care facility that meets their needs and we continue to wish them all the best.”
