Florida woman who was battling Covid-19 dies days after giving birth

A Florida woman died from Covid-19 just days after giving birth to her daughter via emergency c-section.

Kristen McMullen, 30, was hospitalised on July 21, according to her aunt Melissa Syverson. She had pneumonia and was sent home after four days, but was readmitted on July 26.

She gave birth to her daughter, Summer Reign, on July 27 via emergency C-section and was rushed to the intensive care unit. McMullen was placed on a ventilator on Friday and died the following day, according to her family.

“That first week, honestly, Kristen’s main concern was Summer and just making sure that she was OK,” Syverson said.

Summer is in good health and is “certainly bringing joy” to the family, which is still reeling from their loss, Syverson said.

According to James Syverson, his niece was a goal-oriented achiever who was extremely close to her family. He stated that one of her goals was to become a mother and hoped to raise a large family with her husband, Keith.

“She never got sick, and we assumed like many people that this would just go away just as quickly as it came,” he said.

“Because with a lot of younger people — she was only 30 years old — that she would breeze through it and be back taking charge of life.”

The Syversons did not confirm whether McMullen had been vaccinated against Covid-19, but they did state that regardless of a pregnant woman’s vaccination status, others should exercise caution around them.

“We personally feel that whether a pregnant woman is or isn’t [vaccinated] or whether they wear a mask or dont wear a mask, we feel like they’re at a huge risk potentially for it to be deadly for them or their baby,” Melissa Syverson said.

The CDC urged pregnant women Wednesday to get vaccinated against Covid-19, as the coronavirus’ delta variant spreads across the country. According to CDC data, only about 23 percent of pregnant women have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

James Syverson said he and his wife last saw McMullen at her baby shower in Florida last month, where he hugged and praised his niece.

“I gave her a great big hug, and I told her that I loved her,” he said.

“And I think about that. I mean, I’ve been thinking about that almost nonstop and how so many people don’t have the ability to tell their loved ones that they love them and how much they care, and I’m so thankful that I was able to do that.”
