Several members of a Central Texas family were critically injured when an EF-3 tornado tore through an area southwest of Salado Tuesday, destroying their mobile home and hurling them hundreds of feet away.

Miriam Rios, 6, was found unconscious and swinging upside down from a cedar tree hundreds of yards from her home after being thrown by the wind. Vanessa Rios, her pregnant mother, had a miscarriage.

According to Bell County Judge David Blackburn, 23 persons were injured and 12 were hospitalized.

When the tornado warnings arrived on Tuesday night, the Rios Family – mom, dad, and their two children – were in their mobile home off FM2843. Stephen Perez, the children’s uncle, said the family attempted to drive away at first, but when hail began to fall, they fled back into their mobile home.

The situation rapidly deteriorated. The tornado ripped the family’s home apart and tossed each member of the family in various directions, with peak winds of 165 mph.

Father Joel Rios thrown to one side. The mother landed on the other side.

Ezra, the couple’s one-year-old son, landed in the neighboring fields. Miriam, 6, was hurled into a tree.

“[Their mom] remembers waking up, rolling over on her side, and seeing her daughter in a tree and she can’t get up or do anything. She just rolled over and cried,” said Perez.

Once everyone was taken to the hospital, they learned that Vanessa Perez, the expectant woman, had miscarried.

Perez added that since then, several members of the family have been in and out of operations to fix fractured pelvic bones and spinal cord injuries.

According to Perez, baby Ezra escaped with only minor injuries and will be released from the hospital soon.

While the family is thankful for the baby’s good health, they are nevertheless stunned by how much they have lost. Miriam, a Salado ISD first-grader, was celebrating her seventh birthday on Saturday.

The Rios have also lost their house and everything in it. “It’s just the foundation that’s left. There’s absolutely nothing,” Perez said. “And [my sister] was really proud about that home.”

Community members have begun various efforts to help the family with medical bills and with their needs once they are released from the hospital.

You can also donate physical items to the family. Those can be dropped off at 213 Mill Creek Dr. Suite 110, Salado, Texas 76571.

Donations in the form of a check can be made out to the parents Joel & Vanessa Rios and sent to Solana Ranch PO Box 1199 Salado, Texas 76571.
