Handcuffed experienced hijacker steals a police car without the help of his hands: how he did it

In Kansas, United States, a police officer left a thief in the car, relying on handcuffs. But the detainee managed to steal a police car without his hands.

23-year-old Florida resident Joshua Swartwout was caught stealing someone else’s car in Kansas. This fact was not taken into account by the patrolman Tod Hileman when he was taking him to the station.

While on Highway 25 near Atwood in northwest Kansas, the trooper witnessed a serious motorcycle crash and pulled over to help, leaving Swartwout alone in the patrol car, Hileman said.

He was sure nothing would happen, but as soon as Hillman left the car, Joshua climbed into the driver’s seat and stepped on the gas as the cop hadn’t turned off the engine. 

So the hijacker drove 48 kilometers until the gasoline ran out.

Throughout this time, another patrol car was chasing him, so after stopping the man had to run on his own two feet. But this continued until he was stopped by passers-by.

After the offender was detained, he refused to explain how he managed to overcome such a long distance in a car without using his hands. However, the policeman shared his opinion on the matter, he is sure that the hijacker used his knees to drive.

“As a high-speed pursuit driving instructor for 20 years, I can only assume he was using his knees,” Hileman said.

Hileman said the patrol car was not equipped with a rear-seat cage or a partition.

“He was being transported in the front seat of the car,” Hileman said.

“We don’t normally do that, but this trooper saw this accident occur right in front of him and it was in a rural area,” Hileman said. “Being trained as a highway patrol trooper, it’s ingrained that you will help.”
