More than 70 per cent of people of New York have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and the state is now focusing on areas of the state where vaccination rates are low. This plan provides for the closure of mass vaccination centres and the vaccination of people in the comfort of their homes, which may be door-to-door.

The state continues to work to get people vaccinated by partnering with county health departments for home immunizations. Transitory vaccination sites will be available in areas with low vaccination rates, as other mass vaccination sites will close in the coming weeks.

Vaccination rates for people 18 years of age and older using zipcode indicate specific areas with single-digit vaccination rates, according to the New York State COVID-19 vaccine tracking tool. Auburn in Cayuga County has a 1% immunization rate, the lowest of any postcode. Ten cities in various counties across New York constitute the list of ten postal codes with the lowest rates. Local Albany zipcode 12222 is one of these 10 with a rate of 7.8%.

However, looking at zip codes isn’t a good determinant of where the state will focus its efforts because 12222 is primarily a business district located by Washington Avenue and Fuller Road by UAlbany. The same can be said of Stony Brook, zip code 11794, which has a vaccination rate of 7.3% but is primarily occupied by Stony Brook University and Stony Brook University Hospital.

The New York State Department of Health has not confirmed yet which areas the state will be specifically targeted for pop-up clinics.
