A shooting at a high school in the state of Tennessee (South) left one dead and a police officer injured, the Knoxville Police Department reported.

At least one man died on Monday and an officer was injured during a shooting at Austin-East Magnet Secondary School, a high school in Knoxville-Tennessee, according to the authorities.

In a statement, the police explained that the shootings occurred at about 3:15 p.m. after police responded to a call that an armed student was holed up in the school bathroom.

When officers entered the bathroom, the student fired at them, striking one officer, and was hit and killed by return fire from police, Rausch said.

“I’ve spent a lot of time here in this community,” said Rausch, a former Knoxville police chief. “It’s a sad day for Knoxville and it’s tough for Austin-East.”

“Multiple gunshot victims reported, including a KPD officer. The investigation remains active at this time,” posted on twitter.

Knoxville Police confirmed the death of a man and the arrest of the suspect. At the moment, no further information has been offered about the deceased person and his relationship to the incident. For his part, the police officer who was injured in the shooting is in a stable and conscious state.

Bob Thomas, superintendent of Knox County schools, clarified on his Twitter account that the building that houses the institute has already been secured and students who were not involved in the incident have been sent home with their families.

“What happened here today is a terrible tragedy and I’m heartbroken that this awful incident occurred in one of our schools,” Bob Thomas said at the press conference, adding that grief counselors would be available for students.
