In the city of Santee in the US state of California, a twin-engine passenger plane Cessna 340A crashed into a delivery truck and homes near a high school and exploded into a fireball.

The driver was standing near his truck in the street when the plane slammed into the ground.

The crash and fire destroyed several homes near Santana High School in San Diego, California, in the US.

Witnesses posted video and photos on social media showing plumes of smoke rising above the school in Santee.

“It’s a pretty brutal scene for our guys and we’re trying to comb through it,” a deputy chief with the Santee Fire Department said.

The plane, a C340 twin-engine Cessna, was headed to Yuma, Arizona, from Montgomery Field in San Diego.

It had issues and was trying to land at Gillespie Field, which is near the high school, when it crashed, according to NBC San Diego.

Several vehicles were burned, but firefighters were able to put out the blaze before it spread to other houses.

Santana High School officials tweeted the following during the emergency response to the crash and fire: “All Students are Secure.

“There was a plane crash 2 or 3 blocks away. We are currently in a ‘Secure Campus.'”

Later they added: “We have been given the OK by @SDSOSantee to come out of ‘Secure Campus’. We are now out of a ‘Secure Campus’ Students are being released for lunch or dismissal, if they do not have any other classes today.”

At least two buildings completely destroyed in the blaze that erupted after the crash.

Several nearby buildings also appear to have suffered severe damage, with images showing fire fighters using apparatus to reach blazes in at least one roof.

The sheriff’s department is asking locals to avoid the area to allow first responders to make make the area safe.

According to the FAA, the plane was a twin-engine Cessna C340 and crashed at about 12:15 p.m.
