Five officers and another woman were injured in a shooting in south Phoenix early Friday morning, according to Phoenix police.

The shooting took place when officers reached a shooting call around 54th Avenue and Elwood Street, just north of Broadway Road.

A suspect opened fire on an officer as he approached a residence to assist a woman who had been reported injured inside.

While the incident was unfolding, a baby was left outside by someone in the house, and when officers went to the door to bring the infant to safety, the suspect opened fire again, injuring four other officers.

According to Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams, four of the injured officers are making a full recovery, while the fifth officer was injured more severely but is also recovering.

According to reports, the infant is OK.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey tweeted: “Please continue to pray for the five officers injured this morning. Our men and women in blue work day and night—no matter the circumstances—to protect our state from danger. Their unwavering courage & sacrifice helps to keep us safe. Arizona is deeply grateful.”

During the shooting, police say a civilian woman was also shot. She was found in critical condition in the house.

During the confrontation, officers, according to police, returned fire. It’s unclear whether officers fired their weapons, causing any injuries.

Officials advised residents to stay away or stay inside while the suspect was locked in the house for several hours. Around 7 a.m., the barricade situation was “settled” as the suspect was discovered dead inside the house. According to the police, there is no danger to the public.

The officers involved in the incident, according to Chief Williams, had between two and nearly 19 years of police experience.

As of 8 a.m., two of the five injured officers have been released from the hospital, while three remain hospitalized.

At least three other officers were hurt by bullet shrapnel and they reportedly stayed at the scene despite their injuries in an attempt to make sure the scene was taken care of before they got medical attention, Williams told KTAR. She said it was a nod to their heroism and dedication to the community.

“If I seem upset, I am… It’s senseless and it continues to happen over and over again,” Chief Williams said in a media briefing Friday morning, noting that just months ago, another Phoenix officer was shot in the line of duty.
