Conflict in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem: another Israeli-Palestinian war? – report

In the West Bank and Gaza Strip, various parties are interested in raising tensions with Israel, each for its own motives.

Despite Hamas’ furious and aggressive rhetoric about the new tensions in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, Palestinians said on Tuesday that they had the impression that the group is not keen on engaging in another round of violence with Israel.

However, multiple parties in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, each for their own motives, are interested in heightening tensions with Israel.

For the time being, the Sheikh Jarrah rivalry appears to be gaining more attention in the international arena and media than among Palestinians in east Jerusalem and the West Bank and Gaza Strip in general.

For the time being, the Palestinian Authority leadership in the West Bank and armed groups in Gaza appear to be content with the media battles and campaigns they are conducting over the Sheikh Jarrah quarrel, particularly on social media platforms.

At this point, they prefer statements of disapproval to stabbing, shooting, and rocket attacks against Israel.

Despite the neighborhood’s tensions and continuous appeals by Palestinian activists and factions to escalate the “resistance” against Israel, the majority of east Jerusalem residents remain unconcerned about what is going on in Sheikh Jarrah.

It is not that these citizens are indifferent to the threat of evictions of Arab families or the presence of far-right MK Itamar Ben-Gvir in Sheikh Jarrah.

Some locals believe that coming to the streets and battling with police officers is pointless because nothing will stop the Arab families from being evicted after losing their court challenges to two Jewish organizations.

These people believe they’ve seen this movie before, especially in other parts of Jerusalem, such as Silwan and the Old City, where Jewish families have been settling for years.

Other people appear to agree with the PA and Hamas that the Sheikh Jarrah problem is getting a lot of attention, especially in the local and international media. Many Palestinians can vent their rage and dissatisfaction against Israel while laying in bed or smoking a nargila thanks to social media networks.

These feelings appear to be shared by Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

They are concerned about what is going on in Jerusalem. They are concerned about Israel’s purported efforts to “Judaize” the city, as well as Israel’s alleged plan to evict Arabs from the city.

But, for the time being, no one is publicly advocating for another war with Israel.

The need to scale up “resistance” against Israel due of its actions and policies in Jerusalem and the West Bank is being discussed in Ramallah and Gaza. There’s also a chance that the international community will keep putting pressure on Israel.

Yet no one is calling for the Gaza Strip to launch rockets at Israel.

The Palestinian populace does not appear to be eager about fighting another battle over the Sheikh Jarrah problem.

Sheikh Jarrah isn’t the Al-Aqsa Mosque, after all. Some Palestinians have criticized Hamas for bringing the Gaza Strip into conflict over the Sheikh Jarrah dispute last year.

The price many Palestinians in Gaza paid during the war was too high for them. Sheikh Jarrah, they believe, is not a problem that warrants another deadly round of warfare with Israel.

However, this does not rule out the possibility of a war breaking out at any time. Even if Hamas and the PA appear to be more interested in putting the Sheikh Jarrah conflict on the back burner at this point, there are those factions who want to see Israel engage in another military confrontation.

A few factions in Gaza want to pull Israel into yet another cycle of conflict in order to serve the objectives of outside parties like Iran and Hezbollah.

These anti-Hamas parties are likewise eager for another battle to bring down the Hamas regime.

Many groups and people in the West Bank, on the other hand, want a new intifada – not because they dislike Israel, but to bring down the Palestinian Authority.

Opponents of the Palestinian Authority hope to use the Sheikh Jarrah issue as a springboard for significant clashes in the West Bank, forcing the IDF to conduct another massive military attack akin to Operation Defensive Shield in 2002 during the Second Intifada.
