CCTV footage recorded the horrifying moment the Russian military shelled a crowded Ukrainian shopping mall.
When Russian missiles struck the Amstor shopping center in Kremenchuk, central Ukraine, on Monday, more than 1,000 people were inside.
Although many managed to flee, the strike claimed the lives of at least 18 individuals and injured many more.
The attack sent huge clouds of black smoke, dust, and flames into the air and destroyed a large portion of the building.
Now, CCTV footage showing the moment individuals dove into a nearby lake in terror for their lives as mall debris fell all around them has surfaced.
A guy and woman are seen sprinting around a lake in front of cameras that appear to be pointed towards a neighboring park when the image abruptly begins to shake and the duo flees.
As the man dives into the lake for safety and the woman dashes away from the shopping center, a giant shadow falls across the sunny scene and debris begins to rain from the sky.
Other cameras in the park captured images of adults grabbing kids and scurrying for cover as the missile strikes flash could be seen.
Leaders from around the world have branded the assault in Kremenchuk “abominable,” and the president of Ukraine has dubbed it “one of the most daring terrorist attacks in European history.”
The commercial center, according to Mr. Zelensky, posed “no threat to the Russian army” and had “no strategic value.”
He accused Russia of undermining “people’s attempts to live a normal life, which make the occupiers so angry”.
In his evening address, he claimed that it appeared as though Russian forces had targeted the mall on purpose, adding that it was one of the most audacious terrorist strikes in European history.
“Today’s Russian strike at a shopping mall in Kremenchuk is one of the most daring terrorist attacks in European history.”
He added Russia “has become the largest terrorist organisation in the world”.
