In Japan, more than 60 people died while clearing snow

Most of the victims were elderly people who tried to cope with the snow on their own.

In Japan, a huge amount of snowfall led to huge traffic congestion, as well as the death of more than 60 people trying to clear snow from their homes, according to the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Kazuyoshi Akaba.

On the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido, snowfalls have not stopped since December and hit the region badly.

The region lacks the resources to deal with snow. The country’s authorities will provide emergency financial assistance to the affected areas.

“The state will quickly calculate the necessary amounts and provide assistance for the safe removal of snow. We are extremely concerned about the record number of deaths during the clearance,” the minister said.

According to him, the number of victims is already higher than in the super snowy winter of 2017-2018.

Most of the victims, Kazuyoshi Akaba stressed, are elderly people. They were injured while clearing snow, fell from the roofs of their homes while trying to clear the snow cover, or died under snow blockages.

Local authorities will allocate resources allocated by the state primarily to help the population.
