At least 20 people are reported missing due to the landslide caused by torrential rains in Japan’s Shizuoka prefecture. The fate of around 20 people was initially uncertain, and numerous rescuers were looking for the missing.

An enormous mudslide as a result of heavy rains destroyed several houses in Japan. The fate of around 20 people was initially uncertain, as local media reported on Saturday from Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo. Rescue workers looked for the missing.

The incident occurred at 10.30 a.m. local time (GMT + 9) in the city of Atami.

The accident occurred after heavy rains along the Pacific coast of Japan. In the course of global warming, the country is recording more and more heavy rainfall, which also leads to more and more landslides.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

The NHK chain, in turn, reports that the Shizuoka authorities called more than 35,500 people to evacuate due to the threat of new landslides.

According to meteorologists, at least 300 millimeters of precipitation fell in the last 48 hours in Shizuoka Prefecture.

In the past ten years, according to official information, an average of almost 1,500 landslides have occurred in the mountainous island kingdom – almost twice as many as in the previous ten years.
