Inspiring video of a little girl celebrating two years of being cancer-free

One of her family members has told of their emotional reunion as they celebrate their little girl’s two-year anniversary of being cancer-free.

Oonagh Wilkinson was only 19 months old when her family found out that she has two cancerous tumors in early 2019.

But now three, she has recovered completely and marked her special milestone with her siblings and parents by eating cake and going to the beach last week.

Mum Sam, 37, said this was even more special because the family currently lives in Spain, so Oonagh and her father had been in the UK for several weeks to attend some appointments.

‘Our eldest daughter Lois had made a welcome home sign for them and the reunion was very emotional,’ Sam said.

‘It’s such a massive milestone to hit two years cancer free and words cannot express how happy and relieved we are.

‘As a family we wanted to celebrate her milestone and spent the day at the beach and local park. We had lots of balloons, confetti and cake.

‘It was lovely to have all our children back together again after a month apart and have such amazing news to celebrate.’

The family, from Dalton-on-Furness, became anxious when they noticed swelling on Oonagh’s stomach.

Then on New Year’s Day 2019, two MRI scans revealed that tumors had grown in her kidneys and spinal cord.

She was treated with Stage 1 Neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer that mostly affects infants and children. Its cause is unknown but it affects around 100 children each year in the UK, usually under the age of five.

Sam, a stay-at-home mum, said earlier: ‘I was so shocked when they said they were looking for cancer in her blood tests.

‘It was all a bit of shock as it was all so sudden. We never thought her tummy being swollen could be cancer. She was a healthy baby.’

Oonagh underwent five hours of surgery at Manchester Children’s Hospital in March 2019 to remove both tumours.

Thanks to the operation, it was a success and Oonagh has achieved full recovery.

Now, parents Sam and Steve are rushing to their house in the Lake District, to raise money for a donation dedicated to finding a cure for the condition.
