Partnership between Vodafone operator and Electronic Sports League for the first international eSports tournament based on the 5G mobile networks.

eSports and 5G: the Vodafone and ESL tournament

The Vodafone 5G ESL Mobile Open will start on 31 May to close on 29 September. The tournament is born from the partnership signed between the operator and the Electronic Sports League, presenting itself as the first event of its kind with a final that will be played live on 5G networks. Participating players from the 17 countries in which the company operates, dealing with two mobile titles, Asphalt 9: Legends and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

The qualification stages will take place either online, using any compatible Android or iOS device, or with events held in Birmingham (England) and Cologne (Germany). The last matches will go on stage live in the frame of the Milan Games Week scheduled for the beginning of autumn. For more information on the registration methods and on the scheduled competitions, please refer to the pages of the official website. Thus Ralf Reichert, CEO of ESL, commented on the initiative.

The Vodafone 5G ESL Mobile Open is the perfect opportunity to show the millions of video game enthusiasts the full potential of Vodafone’s 5G real-time network, with low latency and ultra-high speed, which allows players to reach new levels of performance everywhere game on mobile devices. As the interest and participation in eSports continue to grow exponentially, many of the key competences and features of gaming are useful and transferable even in the digital workplace.

5G, eSports and cloud gaming

The advent of 5G will enable new ways of using the games not only for multiplayer but also for cloud gaming platforms such as Google’s Stadia or Microsoft xCloud. In addition to bandwidth, latency will be determined: minimized lag will be essential to provide an experience free of slowdowns or delays in command execution. Furthermore, the consumption of data will inevitably have to be taken into account.
