Squid game beats Lupin and becomes the most-watched Netflix show in its first 28 days

The report shows 111 million accounts streamed at least two minutes of Squid Game in the last 27 days.

This announcement comes on the heels of Netflix disclosing audience figures for one of its original shows at Vox Media’s Code Conference in September. As our data indicate, the competition is much behind.

Season one of Bridgerton, the regency-era period drama set in an alternate timeline in which people of colour are fully incorporated into society, has been pushed to second place with 82 million accounts.

Tiger King, the documentary that went viral during the first coronavirus lockdown, is currently ranked ninth, behind Netflix staples Money Heist and Stranger Things, which are currently in their fourth and third seasons, respectively.

Both seasons have much more viewing hours, with Money Heist ranking in second with 619 million and Stranger Things coming in third with 582 million.

The success of the serialised thriller satirising capitalist society can be explained in part by Netflix’s ongoing investment in the booming South Korean market, which produced around 5% of all Netflix Originals available globally in 2019.

To date, the video streaming service has produced more than 70 original series in the Asian country, with a total investment of $1.2 billion planned by the end of the year.
