Researchers in Egypt discovered that those with poor dental health were more likely to experience severe symptoms if infected with the virus.
According to the researchers, the mouth may operate as a reservoir for the virus, allowing infected individuals to have a high ‘viral load’ — particles circulating throughout the body.
Generally, the more virus a person has, the more likely they are to become really ill.
This is the latest piece of study that point to mouthwash as a possible technique for eradicating Covid.
Normally, Covid enters the body via the throat or nose, where it multiplies and spreads throughout the respiratory system, eventually reaching the lungs. However, other doctors believe the virus might travel into the bloodstream after attacking their gums.
The researchers tested their theory on a group of 86 coronavirus patients who also suffered from heart disease.
Patients with good dental hygiene had milder Covid symptoms and less inflammation in their systems, according to the study.
Additionally, they recovered more quickly, according to the researchers, who have not yet published their findings.
Dr Ahmed Mustafa Basuoni, the study’s author, stated that using mouthwash may help people avoid contracting Covid and experience lesser symptoms.
He said that other basic oral health behaviors, such as brushing and frequent dental appointments, can help prevent or reduce the severity of Covid.
“Oral tissues could act as a reservoir for SARS-CoV-2, developing a high viral load in the oral cavity.
“Therefore, we recommended maintenance of oral health and improving oral hygiene measures, especially during Covid infection.”
The report was presented during the American College of Cardiology’s Middle East 2021 annual meeting.
