Green chiretta, a traditional Thai herbal cure, has been certified by the Thai government as an effective and inexpensive herbal treatment for coronavirus. Thailand’s government reports that a successful experiment in prisons found that 99.02 percent of 11,800 detainees who took green chiretta to treat coronavirus recovered.
Chitsanuphong Saublaongiw, a jail medic, stated: “Green chiretta has a substance called andrographolide.”
Saublaongiw said that “the substance helps limit the spread of the virus”.
He added: “After taking green chiretta, the prisoners had better chest X-ray results, fewer symptoms, the disease was less severe, and they returned to normal quickly.”
According to Sky News, Thailand’s prisons are overcrowded and cramped.
As a result, almost one-quarter of the country’s convicts tested positive for coronavirus in the six months beginning April 2021.
According to reports, 141 Thai jails are expecting to generate 38 million green chiretta tablets by November.
Thailand’s minister of justice, Somsak Thepsuthin said: “If we use modern medicine, the cost is 20 times, 30 times, 50 times higher…
“And in the prisons, it’s very crowded. We must have [green chiretta] to treat people.
“If it’s a mild illness, we can use this medicine, as it’s inexpensive and effective.”
While Thailand’s authorities have approved the use of green chiretta in mild instances, it is not a replacement for vaccination.
The herbal cure does not prevent Covid infection and is not appropriate for severe instances.
Dr. Mayuree Tangkiatkumjai of Srinakharinwirot University’s department of clinical pharmacy commented on the herbal cure.
“Andrographolide is referred to as a substance found in green chiretta that helps suppress viruses and inflammation,” he said.
“However, COVID-19 is still a new emerging infectious disease, so there is no sufficient research to confirm that green chiretta can prevent and cure COVID-19 yet.”
Dr Tangkiatkumjai highlighted that “suitable” dosages of green chiretta “is still debatable”.
Furthermore, additional research is required to confirm its efficacy and negative effects.
Two more green chiretta trials including 1,400 Covid patients with mild symptoms are planned to be completed by next spring.
Green chiretta – what it is?
Green chiretta is a plant native to South Asian countries, according to RxList, a WebMd-owned online medical resource.
Its leaf and stem have long been used to prevent and treat common colds.
Loss of appetite, diarrhoea, vomiting, rash, headache, runny nose, and weariness are all possible side effects.
When administered in the short term, the herbal medicine is “likely safe.”
