May 8 is celebrated as World Ovarian Cancer Day, a date that aims to raise awareness about this dangerous disease, diagnosed annually in almost 250,000 women around the world, and its symptoms.

Here’s the list of symptoms and signs that can help you detect them in the early stages.

Although they can be signs of other diseases, we recommend that you see a doctor as soon as possible if you have the following symptoms:

  • abdominal or pelvic painconstant swelling
  • difficulty eating food or feeling full very quickly
  • need to urinate more often
  • menstrual cramps and cycle disturbances
  • pain when having sex
  • vaginal bleeding

Although ovarian cancer is the seventh among gynecological cancers, it has a much higher fatality because it is diagnosed late, and 80% of cases are already detected in advanced stages.

But what should you do if you suspect you might have this type of cancer?

The most commonly used tests are the complete pelvic exam, transvaginal ultrasound, and the CA-125 blood test, which measures the amount of the CA-125 protein, as women with ovarian cancer often have high levels of CA-125 protein in their blood.
