HIGH cholesterol raises the chances of significant health problems like heart disease and stroke. The illness is generally silent but serious, with few symptoms. An expert, on the other hand, shared the color of your nails as a possible indicator of high amounts.
Even though not all cholesterol is toxic, the ‘bad’ kind can be dangerous to your health. That’s why it’s critical to maintain a healthy level of stress. While identifying cholesterol can be challenging because it isn’t connected with many symptoms, there is one tell-tale indicator that can help.
“High cholesterol or ‘bad’ LDL has no specific symptoms,” noted Monika Wassermann, Medical Director at Olio Lusso.
“I know this is exactly what you did not want to hear, but it is the truth.”
A blood test is the most reliable approach to determine your current levels.
Despite this, Wassermann stated that your nails are one place where indicators of elevated amounts can appear.
She said: “High cholesterol levels cause blockage of your arteries.
“Here is the thing; the extra cholesterol is deposited in your arteries, forming a plaque.
“It is this plaque that makes the arteries narrow, with large deposits blocking them completely.
“Narrow or blocked arteries limit the blood flow to various parts of your body, including your nails.”
Your nails may develop dark lines underneath them as a result of this.
“Although high cholesterol is referred to as a silent condition, dark lines under your nails is one of the great ways to spot it,” Wassermann added.
Splinter haemorrhages are another name for this symptom. Thin red to reddish-brown lines under your nails, according to Medline Plus.
These lines normally travel in the same direction as the growth of the nail.
Their name stems from the fact that they look like a splinter under your fingernail.
Although this symptom could indicate excessive cholesterol, the best approach to determine your levels is to have a blood test.
