After a vial was found contaminated by foreign material, Moderna Inc announced on Friday that it was recalling 764,900 doses of its COVID-19 vaccine made by its contract manufacturer Rovi.

Moderna stated that no safety concerns had been detected with the batches supplied in January in Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.

The contamination was discovered in just one vial, according to the drugmaker, who is recalling the entire batch out of “an abundance of caution.” It didn’t say what was discovered in the vial.

Japanese regulators banned the use of some doses of the vaccine last year, which Moderna subsequently recalled, following an investigation that discovered stainless steel contamination in some vials.

To date, about 900 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine have been given worldwide.

Moderna stated on Friday that the contamination did not pose a risk to the remaining vials in the lot.
