Two very dangerous health risks increase dramatically after being diagnosed with coronavirus, and the risk remains high for at least a month. What the investigators discovered
The researchers noted in one of the largest studies of its kind, published in The Lancet in August 2021, that the risk of heart attack and stroke increased dramatically in the weeks following the diagnosis of COVID-19.
Every person in Sweden who was diagnosed with COVID-19 between February 1 and September 14, 2020 was included in the study.
A total of 87,000 persons were polled, with 57 percent of them being women and an average age of 48. The researchers compared them to almost 348,000 Swedish individuals of the same age and gender who had not been diagnosed with coronavirus for the study.
According to the study, the risk of heart attack increased from three to eight times in the first week after being confirmed with COVID-19.
The risk of thrombosis during a stroke episode increased from three to six times. Both risks gradually decreased in the weeks that followed, although they remained increased for at least the first month.
Scientists explain that some bacterial or viral infections, such as the flu, appear to raise the risk of having a heart attack or stroke, even if just temporarily.
COVID-19, on the other hand, appears to be more harmful, maybe because it causes a more severe inflammatory response, increasing the risk of thrombosis.
