US National Archives wants Trump investigated for illegally ripping documents

The US government agency in charge of presidential records preservation has requested the Justice Department to look into Donald Trump’s handling of official documents.

In the US, all presidential correspondence is obliged to be archived.

However, officials allege that the former president shredded a number of documents in violation of the law.

According to the Archives, several of them had to be taped back together.

Mr. Trump’s 15 boxes of paperwork, which he was supposed to pass over when he left the White House, were instead moved to his Florida property.

They contain letters from Mr. Trump to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as well as Barack Obama’s presidential handover letter.

Mr. Trump has previously battled with the National Archives. He unsuccessfully sued to prevent the transfer of White House data to a congressional committee investigating the violence on the US Capitol grounds on January 6.

Mr. Trump acknowledged collaboration with the National Archives in a statement.

“The media’s characterisation of my relationship with NARA [National Archives and Records Administration] is Fake News. It was exactly the opposite! It was a great honour to work with NARA to help formally preserve the Trump Legacy,” he said.
