Merkel wants a million points for charging electric cars operating across Germany within the next decade.

The spread of electric cars is gradually becoming more widespread, but three obstacles still prevent this type of car from conquering the market: the purchase price, the autonomy guaranteed by the batteries on board and the network of the refills in the territory. In Germany, they are thinking of improving from the latter front.

Germany focuses on electric cars

Angela Merkel said that by 2030 at least one million charging stations will have to be installed in the country. A significant increase compared to the approximately 20,000 points currently set up and operational. To achieve the goal, active cooperation from all the stakeholders involved will be required, including automakers who in turn will benefit. These are the words of the Chancellor.

To that end we wish to create one million charging points by 2030 and the industry will have to participate in this effort.

A declaration of intent arrived just before yesterday’s meeting that brings together representatives of the German automotive industry and the national authorities with the common aim of finding new paths to follow in order to support the evolution of the sector. A necessary step, also in consideration of the target set by the European Union which by 2050 wants to become carbon neutral. In this regard, neighbouring France has decided that it will ban the sale of vehicles with a combustion engine (therefore also hybrids) starting from 2040.

The transition process will have inevitable consequences for the entire supply chain: it will be necessary to find ways of preserving the workforce by moving from the lines that today produce more traditional vehicles to the plants from which electric cars will come out. A scenario in which the legislature will also have to play its part.
