Volkswagen planning to build its own operating system 'vw.os'

Within the next three to five years, Volkswagen will invest up to eight billion euros in the creation of an operating system called vw.os for vehicles belonging to the twelve brands of the group. A single platform that by 2025 will be present on all VW cars, both electric and hybrid cars that look to the future and the more traditional ones. An effort that points in the direction of connected mobility.

vw.os: Volkswagen, an OS for all cars

The announcement came at the Frankfurt Motor Show. According to Christian Senger, number one of VW’s Digital Car and Services division, the newly formed Car.Software at work on the project will consist of around 10,000 people. Globally, Volkswagen employs 650,000. The vw.os debut is scheduled for next year.

The first car for which the presence of vw.os was confirmed is ID 3 unveiled last week on the occasion of the German event. A 100% electric propulsion vehicle that will arrive in dealerships starting next year with a price below 30,000 euros.

In recent months, the Wolfsburg company has announced a partnership with Microsoft in order to use the Azure infrastructure for cloud data management. Speaking of connected cars, VW is among the realities that have expressed a preference for WiFi as the market reference standard instead of 5G.
