They first fought in the stands – but that was just the beginning. A mass brawl broke out at a soccer game in central Mexico. The game had to be stopped.

At least 22 fans have been injured in a brawl at a soccer stadium in Mexico. Nine of them were taken to the hospital, two of them with serious injuries, according to a tweet from the civil defense of the state of Querétaro on Sunday night (local time).

The game took place at La Corregidora Stadium in the city of Querétaro in central Mexico. FC Querétaro and Atlas Guadalajara played against each other. Supporters of both teams initially beat each other up in the stands. Then they stormed the field, where they sometimes continued to attack each other with chairs and poles.

Bystanders, including women and children, sought shelter in the stadium tunnels. Players fled to the dressing rooms. Querétaro goalkeeper Washington Aguerre was one of those who stayed on the pitch and tried to influence the fans. The game was interrupted in the 62nd minute when the score was 0:1 and then stopped.

The Mexican soccer league condemned the events in the stadium in a tweet and announced that an investigation had been launched.
