An 18-year-old left the scene after a crash. The young woman was caught as her car automatically reported the accident.
Accident reporting services are actually supposed to save the lives of drivers – but they have filed a criminal complaint against a driver in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate for hitting the road.
As the police announced late Monday evening, the automated reporting system installed in their car had reported a stronger collision on a federal road near Hettenleidelheim.
The control center, however, was unable to contact the driver and notified the police. However, they did not find any vehicle involved in the accident.
The officials finally came up with an 18-year-old via the owner’s address of the reported car. As it turned out, she had strayed off the roadway and hit a delineator post. She then left the scene of the accident without permission – “unaware” that the safety system in her car had already reported the collision.
New cars must be equipped with eCall since 2018
Since March 2018, all new cars in the EU must be equipped with a so-called eCall (emergency call).
The emergency call system automatically reports a traffic accident to the Europe-wide emergency number 112.
This should enable faster rescue measures and reduce the number of road fatalities.
