Israeli forces shot and killed a 17-year-old Palestinian amid clashes near the occupied West Bank town of Jenin, the Palestinian health ministry and the official Wafa news agency reported Monday.

Mohammed Abu Salah was slain in the village of Silat al-Harithiya, according to the health ministry, as troops arrived late Sunday to demolish the home of Muhammad Jaradat, who is accused of killing an Israeli late last year.

Witnesses reported an exchange of fire between IDF and Palestinian gunmen.

“Violent riots” erupted ahead of the planned demolition, the army said, with “hundreds of Palestinians” taking part, some of whom tossed bombs at Israeli troops.

“The troops identified a number of armed rioters, and fired towards them in order to neutralise the threat,” the army statement read, without explicitly addressing the teen’s death.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, ten persons were also injured in the gunfire.

Jaradat is charged with murdering one Israeli in a December 16 shooting attack on a car near the illegal Jewish outpost of Homesh. The former settlement was demolished as part of Israel’s 2005 pullout from Gaza. The Israeli military had previously stated that it would demolish a floor of the house in which he resided.

Israel claims that demolishing perpetrators’ homes can help deter future attacks.

Human rights organizations have called the approach, which frequently targets households with additional family members, as collective punishment.
