Docker announced the latest version of “Docker Enterprise“, “Docker Enterprise 3.0” at the on-site event DockerCon 2019 on April 30, 2019 (US time). It features features such as ease of workflow that covers developers and operators, and ease of handling different operating environments.

Docker describes the new version as “the only enterprise container platform that covers from desktop to cloud, allowing organizations to build and common to any application from hybrid cloud to edge, and to run safely anywhere“.

The following new features have been added to Docker Enterprise 3.0:

Docker Desktop Enterprise

The desktop tool Docker Desktop Enterprise has been integrated. The purpose of the tool is to make it easier for new developers to work on their development. So Docker Desktop Enterprise can be distributed under centralized control, and can easily replicate the configuration of the production environment. Also, it is possible to start development of container applications using templates without using Docker’s CLI commands.

Docker Application

The newly added Docker Application is a tool based on the Cloud Native Application Bundle (CNAB), which is a specification developed by Docker in collaboration with Microsoft etc., which is a specification for packaging multiple containers into a single application. Configurations such as Docker Compose, Kubernetes YAML files, Helm Charts, etc. can basically be created independently of the deployment environment.

Docker Kubernetes Service (DKS)

Docker Enterprise supports Kubernetes in addition to Docker Swarm as an orchestration engine from the previous version 2.0. The new component, named Docker Kubernetes Service (DKS), can bring consistency to the Kubernetes environment, from the developer’s desktop to the production environment. Version packs can be used to absorb differences in Kubernetes versions, as well as provide features such as role-based access control and authentication.
