US Army wakes residents with gun shots

Local residents heard shots early in the morning and alerted the emergency services, a police spokesman said. A neighboring forest area was then searched with nine patrol cars.

People in the Mainz districts of Lerchenberg and Finthen, as well as the municipality of Ober-Olm, were frightened from their beds at four o’clock on Wednesday morning.

Frightened residents alerted the police, who drove off with nine patrol cars. All callers stated that they had heard gunshots coming from the Ober-Olmer Wald area. The officers then searched the area.

The officials then met four military police officers in front of a US military training ground, according to a police press release

The shots were part of an exercise, the members of the US Army said.

According to a spokesman for the Mainz police, it is completely normal to hear gunshots in the area there during the day.

At four o’clock in the morning, on the other hand, that was unusual.
